Continued Surge Pushes Preliminary Finished Steel Imports up 5% in April
The U.S. imported a total of 2,997,000 net tons of steel in April, down 2% from March final data according to the latest report from AISI. Finished steel imports were up 5% through the same period.

Siemens will replace the existing DC main drives in the finishing mills of ArcelorMittal’s plants in Dunkirk, France, and Ghent, Belgium, with more powerful AC systems. The first conversion work is planned for late 2012.

BHP Billiton to Restart Operations at Temco
BHP Billiton announced a 90-day suspension of operations at its TEMCO1 manganese alloy facility in Tasmania, Australia, on February 23, 2012, to review the economic viability of continuing operations. With that review now complete, BHP Billiton has decided to restart Temco operations, with planning for a full restart commencing immediately.

Siemens Installs Heat Recovery Pilot Plant at Stahlwerk Thüringen
A heat recovery pilot plant installed by Siemens Metals Technologies in the electric steel plant of Stahlwerk Thüringen GmbH in Unterwellenborn, Germany, is now in operation since April 2012. The plant uses molten salt as the heat transfer medium and is connected to the existing exhaust gas system of the EAF.

Ruukki to Provide Steel Frame for New Power Plant in Estonia
Rautaruukki has signed a contract with Alstom Power to deliver the steel frame for a new power plant in Narva, Estonia. Ruukki will supply the steel frame structures for the boiler, with the potential for a second unit.
